This is a very informative chapter. I recall the broadest elements of the M&A fire sale nature of the times. Your expectations about the sort of folks you'd find at the Post made me smile. After years as a solo archivist I became an academic librarian. To my dismay I discovered: Librarians are not always detail oriented, not usually organized, not always readers. It is a strong case for universal internships while you can still change your mind about your focus. When you got going about journalism in the 80s it made me think of this scene: https://youtu.be/1oHYpGi16-8 Starting at about 1:11. (Shared even though I was much more impressed with The Return of the Secaucus Seven as something relevant to my own personal experience of the time.)
